2021 Cuvée Number Five | Chardonnay

A sophisticated Chardonnay that playfully teases the palate.

As if a portal to the fog-laden and wind-swept hillsides of the Sonoma Coast, this powerful Chardonnay transports the senses with classic aromas of pear tart, green apple, Meyer lemon, and an unmistakable salinity. Bold flavors of baked apple, toasted vanilla, and honeysuckle create a richly complex and layered mouthfeel that is harnessed by the vibrant acidity this AVA is known for.

Beyond the unquestionable allure and beauty of Sonoma County lie an amazing number of microclimates, soil conditions, and distinct geographies conducive to growing and making wonderful wines. This incredible diversity has resulted in over sixteen sub regions in this county alone, one of which is the Sonoma Coast. The 2020 vintage marks the fourth iteration of Cuvée Number Five. The wine is a singular clone of Chardonnay (Clone 76) from one vineyard site.

Carefully hand harvested in the early morning hours of September 5th, the immaculate clusters for this Sonoma Coast Chardonnay arrived to our winery in the cool, pre-dawn air for hand sorting. Each carefully inspected cluster was then gently pressed and slowly transferred to tank for overnight cold-settling, allowing for a clean racking to 60 gallon French oak barrels (60% new). Indigenous yeast carried out a slow, methodical fermentation over the following 4 months, preserving the purity of fruit that is so greatly desired in this cuvée. After 17 months of undisturbed aging, this beautiful wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

After five years of making of my own label, this blend was born. Number Five is the most dynamic and energetic of all the numerical cuvées. It is unpredictable, always in motion, and a wine that challenges as much as it delights. I have always seen the coastal maritime influence present in the appellation as giving the region an ever-changing, constantly in motion quality. My hope is to capture the region’s mercurial nature in this single bottling.
